Nappies & nappy covers

Here at Purple Lane we love cloth nappies. There are various options available – please get in touch if it all seems a bit overwhelming! But I’ll try to explain as clearly as possible below…

Prices say ‘from’ because the exact price will depend on the fabric used and where I have been able to source it. The starting price is applicable to in stock cotton/plush fabrics. Wrap scraps vary a lot in price from the budget wrap companies to high end wraps.

All in two nappies (AI2)

These nappies are like an “all in one” in the sense that everything you need in a nappy is included, but the inserts can snap in and out for quicker drying, hence the name “all in two”. They have a waterproof shell that has an outer patterned fabric (usually cotton or plush), a lining of velour (cotton or bamboo) or plush and a hidden layer of PUL. The inserts are very absorbent and include the fabrics zorb, hemp fleece and heavy bamboo fleece – an hourglass shaped insert and a long snake booster that can be folded to where the most absorbency is needed. They are available in three sizes:

  • “One size fits most” (OSFM) – this is a SDPL pattern and has a fold down rise to make the nappy smaller, helping it fit babies and toddlers in the approximate range of 9-40 lbs.
    • Cotton or plush shell – from £23
    • Wrap scrap shell –
      • Half cut – from £26
      • Full cut – from £32
    • Customer-sourced fabric shell – £18

Hybrid fitted nappies (hybrids)

These nappies are like all in two nappies except they contain a hidden layer of polar fleece in the shell instead of PUL. Hybrids, as the name suggests, can be used in two ways – like an all in two or like a fitted nappy. We like to use these nappies like fitted nappies (i.e. with a cover) for periods of extended wear, because the polar fleece inside the shell acts as another water repellent barrier, driving wetness back into the inserts, or these nappies can be used without a cover for shorter periods (upto around 3 hours for an average wetter), like an all in two nappy, as long as clothing isn’t so tight that it puts pressure on the fleece to let wetness through. Using a hybrid fitted nappy with cover, as opposed to a standard fitted nappy with cover, was the only set up that really worked for longer periods of time with my eldest son who was a very heavy wetter in nappies.

The inserts are very absorbent and include the fabrics zorb, hemp fleece and heavy bamboo fleece – an hourglass shaped insert and a long snake booster that can be folded to where the most absorbency is needed. They are available in three sizes:

Nappy wraps

These are waterproof covers for fitted nappies. There is no absorbency in the wraps, they are designed to go over your own fitted or folded flat nappies and it should fit over most popular brands. The rise is adjustable with three rows of snaps on the front. The elastic around the legs and waist is soft fold over elastic. The snaps on the waist include two rows, enabling a good fit around the waist and legs independently. They are available in two sizes:

Fleece soakers

Fleece nappy covers, also known as fleece soakers, are great for periods of extended wear, because the fleece is very breathable, more so than PUL. The covers I sew are made with polar fleece, which is water resistant, so as long as the nappy underneath is absorbent enough for the child wearing it, it will act as a water resistant barrier on top of the nappy. There is a double layer of fleece in the ‘wet zone’ where the most water resistance is needed.

We also love this kind of fleece cover because the leg and waist trim is also made of fleece, and therefore is lovely and soft against the child’s skin, perfect for periods of extended wear. And the lack of fastenings mean it’s hard for little ones to pull it off himself.

There are various designs of fleece available. Trims (waist band, leg cuffs and wet-zone extra layer) in plain block colour of your choice. Here are the measurements for each size – I recommend measuring over the nappy which would be worn under it. The rise is from the top at the front to the top at the back, going under the crotch.
